This is Dylan, my parents’ miniature, if slightly portly, dachshund.

He’s a bit bonkers and loves chocolate. So much so that last night while we were out, he jumped up to a height that we did not think possible for him and grabbed a bar of chocolate from a shelf, unwrapped it and scoffed the lot. That’s why he’s portly. He looks a bit grumpy in this photo. That’s not because of the chocolate-jumping incident, it’s because he’s outside and it’s cold. He hates the cold more than he does being outside. There isn’t a warm, fleecy blanket to burrow in. That’s what he’s doing right now as I type this.

My home town, Ashton-under-Lyne, has a market which dates back to the 13th century. It’s not very medieval looking today but it’s rich pickings for ideas. I’ll definitely return back to Ashton Market throughout the year. Today I got to take my first ‘portrait’ shot. It wasn’t intentional. I was snapping near my subject’s burger stall and he started smiling for the camera. I couldn’t resist as somebody was happy to have their photo taken and he even went to get his sunglasses!

I’ve left my photos at work and am now in Manchester visiting my parents. My reputation for being a dullard is further compounded by the fact that I’ve also left my camera in London. Ouch! I’ll borrow my dad’s camera for Saturday and Sunday – thankfully we have the same Samsung compact.

Friday’s photo will be of a science experiment that I did with my lovely Year 5 class.

12th Feb 2010: And here it is two weeks late . . .

Our topic is Changing State. This investigation looked at how condensation appears after leaving ice cubes in the can for 10 minutes.

I don’t have much to write about today. I just want to thank Giesla and Murray for their lovely daffodils!

There was a fantastic sunset this evening. I was lucky that there was enough light to be able to get such a clear shot. There were a few to choose from today so I thank Phil, Jackie and Liam for all agreeing on this one. Sometimes I just can’t choose myself. I’m so indecisive!

I decided to experiment more bravely with photo editing software today. My subject was very ordinary and I am conscious of the fact that it’s another still life(ish) looking up. I used PhotoFiltre which is a fantastic free piece of editing software. The effect I’ve added is notepaper. I really recommend anyone starting out editing photos to try this.

Anyway, here’s a window above a radiator.
